I observed the following on the roof of a recent install. It appears sealing locknuts were used and then covered in gobs of silicone. It looks ugly, but is it Code compliant? A better way to accomplish this?

Are those plastic boxes with no hubs, holes drilled in them where needed not supported etc... ?

Not sure where you draw the line between the conductors maybe being water resistant regardless of the j-box but the install lacks a lot to be desired looks to me.

if sealing locknuts were used I would say it is good. the silicon is just to make whoever wired it up feel better.

in any case, the wire would be required to be water proof so what difference would it make if it leaked a little?

I agree, the minimum requirement would be to use the sealing locknuts. If you want to add some extra protection by globing on some silicone have at it.

Around here we would get dinged for not having the boxes supported.

However we can see what looks like a piece of THHN through the KO that they didn't silicone shut on what may look to be a disconnect.

Upper left? Maybe you're seeing this:

Don't know what kind of boxes those are, if there is support methods we can't see, or if there were modifications to them.

One could certainly use non metallic boxes if you used bonding bushings or other methods to assure electrical continuity of metallic raceways. The lower box in the picture looks like it may have a "sealing locknut" or there may just be some shadow that makes it look that way. I would likely have used a myers hub for such entry.
