I had an electrician install a 500 watt halogen floodlight over the driveway at my house about five years ago. It was working fine until about two weeks ago when it quit. I replaced the bulb, but that did not help. So I looked for other problems. I found none. I pulled the supply line back inside the house and reconnected it to the lamp and the lamp works fine.
I can only conclude that one of the wire nuts that was used to connect the wires from the lamp to the supply romex line had worked loose, or possibly a thin film of corrosion had developed on the surface of the wires.
Are wire nuts suitable for connecting stranded wire to solid wire in an outdoor installation like this? Is there a better technique for making these connections? I do not want to have to make this repair again.
