A friend of mine just had his addition sided, but the siders didn't put j-blocks in where he had the wire sticking outside. He asked me if it was ok to screw in a pan box to support the fixture (or pop-in box), or would it be necessary to cut in a j-block himself. Apparently the siders didn't want to pay for the j-blocks. Any help on how to support these outdoor fixtures is appreciated.

Go to the supply house, Arlington Mfg. makes a excellent siding block box combo. It's one piece and comes in various sizes and siding configurations.

I don't like the siding blocks that the siding guys use. For a light fixture, you have to cut it out and install an octagon box.

The Arlington ones are more simple to install. We spec the 2-piece version.
