Is it required or suggested that when mounting any exterior light fixture to the box that a bead of caulk be placed around the back of the fixture to prevent moisture penetration ?

NEC 410-4 (a) Fixtures installed in wet or damp locations shall be installed that water cannot enter or accumulate in wiring compartments, lampholders, or other electrical parts. All fixtures installed in wet locations shall be marked, "Suitable for Wet Locations." All fixtures in stalled in damp locations shall be marked , "Suitable for Wet Locations" or " Suitable for Damp Locations". Your fixture must be suitable for the location and your box should also have these qualities.

It is not only a good idea for preventing water from entering the electrical outlet, it also prevents water from running inside the wall.
