If I surface mount a receptacle to a post in my backyard, where the receptacle's power is coming from my house's basement's panel, 225.32 would seem to indicate to me that the panel's breaker wouldn't be a sufficient disconnecting means for that receptacle. Instead, the code seems to indicate that a separate disconnecting means, located somewhere on or near that post, would be required by code. This seems kind of like overkill. Is my understanding wrong?

It comes down to you're definition of a structure, is a post a structure or is it a box support? A structure, I say no way. Others may disagree but IMO their argument is weak because the post meets the definition of equipment.

Structure. That which is built or constructed, other than equipment.
