Outdoor step lights

We are doing step lights on a deck on the back of a customers house. The lights will be mounted on the risers, one for each step. We typically cut in a metal gem box into the wooden riser, install a UF connector in the back. We’ve done this other times in the past but it got me thinking. The metal box isn’t 3R. Any suggestions to actually do this correctly?
