For an area under a second floor deck. The deck is not watertight.
Looking to move air on those days when sitting in the shade of the deck.

What brands/models do you like that can take the occasional rain dripping through.

Hunter sells fans that might be the ticket for this. The sticker is fitting it up to a fan rated ? wp bell type box without having any leaking issue into the stem and then down into the guts of the fan itself. A drain hole drilled thru the upper canopy might assist in preventing this. Otherwise , if using all the supplied sealing washers and rubber gasket parts it should be fine.

It's been my experience that most of the wet/outdoor rated fans are only protected from the sides down. Not much. if any protection on the top. I had a customer call and complain that her fan had quit. It was installed on a patio that was under a deck with no top. After some questioning, she fessed up that she had turned an ice chest over with melted ice on the deck and it dripped down into the top of the fan below.

She’s acting as her own GC, it’s been built three times, the last time was $60,000+. The first contractor built it crooked, the second contractor ran screws through the composite deck boards, when clips were supposed to be used. I bet she has over $100 grand in it by now! LOL!

Makes me wonder why you want to get involved in such a mess.

And the third contractor used an EC who installed fans she didn't like...

Arlington has a wp fan rated box for outdoors. Just used 2 under a deck.
But is there fans that are WP? One thing to have them damp rated with ceiling that doesn't leak vs under a deck that does leak water through.

I've seen many outdoor rated fans that still not WP from above the canopy.

Only completely WP ones I can ever recall seeing were wash down types for agricultural buildings. They were more of an industrial plain jane looking fan that hung from a J hook and had a cord coming out of them with sealed cord connector. Probably a 5-15 plug on end of the cord as well. Been a while since I seen one.

Thanks for the input. I will be using one of those wet rated fan boxes, cut into a 3/4” thick glued up redwood panel that spans the deck’s floor joist, and this wet rated Hunter fan. Money was a consideration and this fan had good ratings and was $100+ less expensive than the other fans I was looking at.

Won’t get here till February, but as long as it’s up by May, I’m good.
Thanks again.
