I understand i need a 20 gfi breaker to run direct burial 12/3 12 inches deep to the outside garage. If this home has a 20a circuit already existing in the yard, which is used for a post light, is it legal to install a 20 amp GFI receptacle to the existing circuit and tap off of that to the garage.
Just a thought.Do I have any options because it would be difficult to run a new line. Can I go 18 inches deep????

So the garage power will be dependent on the light on the post being turned on??? This does not sound like a good idea.

If you go 24" deep you do not need a GFCI. If you only go 12" or 18" you still need a GFCI on the circuit.

If you wanted to run 12/3 and have 2 circuits at the garage I am not sure how tapping off the light circuit will help. Do you know how much capacity you need at the garage and how much is on the post light circuit??

My mistake ...12/2 is what I will run. It's for a garage door opener and a light fixture.

garage door won't work unless the post light is on. You will also need a disconect at the garage.

That's th plan. Photocell on the post with a GFI outlet.Tap from the outlet to the garage. Will I need a disconnect in the garage for the Garage opener ?? A basic light switch ??
Thanks
