Why not. No code against it. Lots of time folks want to light stuff or power it up. Better than extension cords all over the place.

Is it ok to install an outlet in a wood mantle?
Receptacles are not permitted face up in countertop etc ut that would not pertain to a mantle-- It is permitted . A good product for this would be the sillite receptacles.

Some people use them for Christmas lights. I would make it a switched receptacle myself.

Many moons ago, well before cell phone cameras, I was in a house where the owner had a long, thick solid wood mantle and he wanted power there for holiday decorating. He had routed a recess for a power strip and cord into the mantle on the left side, near a wall outlet. When the holidays came he simply laid the power strip in the recess and plugged it in.

Some hacks are better than others. :)
