Any contractors that come into your plant need to meat or exceed your plant safety rules. Depending on the job size plant safety classes might be needed. This should not come down to the OSHA website but should be covered in your rule book.

Our plant fines the contractor $500 a violation. If they rack up to many violations then they shut them down and require everyone on the site to pass a drug test, pass our safety class and test before they can go back to work.

They shut down an addition because of safety issues and kicked everyone off the grounds. They were in the middle of poring the footings and turned around the cement trucks in rout but let them finish the ones that were on site. It was 2 weeks before construction was started back up.

Occupation
Electrician
*** I?m not an electrician or a journeyman. I work in a huge automotive plant and work on 96 volt DC and down, 120 AC, deal with a lot of relay controls, air controls, and the equipment computer systems. I do work with other electricians any time I enter anything over 48 volts dc or 110 ac; when working in hot DC control panels I have an electrician present.

Pick their brains. Most will be happy to assist with your education if you are cordial, sincere and show respect for safety and the rules.

Be adamant about returning the favor of their knowledge by doing favors for them. Most of the time it's the thought that counts, but taking a rack of 2 inch rigid up two flights of stairs ain't a bad gesture, either.

Consider becoming an apprentice. I really enjoyed my apprenticeship and made some life long friends from school. Guys and gals I literally trust my life with.

The more you learn about electricity, the safer you will work. And I don't think anyone can ever learn everything about our craft as it seems that electrons are substantially craftier than the craftsmen that try to get them to stay where they belong.

We have gone through this with outlets in the attic for equipment.
The outlet is not required to be gfci. But if you are working on the equipment you are suppose to use gfci protection. It's in the NEC some where.

My job is 75% trouble shooting and 25% enforcing the safety hand book. I do respect our electricians and they respect me. I have learned a lot over the years and have saved them form doing lots of unneeded work. The biggest problem I have is that I do not know much of the NEC.

Once stuff at work calms down I would love to work towards getting my apprentice.
