Outside GFCI branch circuits

Sure but it depends on which circuit you use. I try and avoid that because the outdoor receptacles would be on an afci. I prefer it not be on an afci circuit. I have seen many issues with power saws and afci's.

Common practice in my area is to daisy chain all the exterior outlets off the GFCI outlet on the panel.

Same here, and has been for 25+ years. If there is one GFCI breaker in the panel, 100% chance it is feeding the exterior receptacles, and possibly garage receptacles/garage door opener under older Code.

As Dennis mentioned, it depends on the circuit. Kitchen or bathroom circuits wouldn't be viable for that, and if under the 2014 Code, AFCI protection would also be required on many interior circuits. Here, under the 2012 IRC, they would probably be fed on the same circuit as crawlspace/attic receptacles for heat trace and HVAC convenience receptacle(s); 210.63.
