Outside GFCI

Must the GFCI weatherproof receptacles on the outside of the building be on their own specific circuit or does the NEC allow these receptacles to be connected to one of the receptacle circuits within the building?

Re: Outside GFCI

Re: Outside GFCI

They can be on any circuit that hasn't been expressly forbidden, such as bathroom and small appliance circuits.

I tend to put mine on the garage GFI circuit.

Re: Outside GFCI

What about a normal recepticle outside connected to an GFCI protected circut on the inside?

Re: Outside GFCI

Yeah, that's what I do. I install a 20amp circuit for the GFI in the garage, and pull the load side out for the front and back door of the house.

There's a barbeque that plagues me that draws enough to kick a 15 amp circuit with a little more load with it. That's why I always go with a 20 outside.

Re: Outside GFCI

I almost always run receptacles on 20 amp circuits. Actually I can't remember the last time I bought a 15 amp Breaker. The last time I bought 14 AWG was for a three way and I didn't have any 12 left so I got 25 feet.

George knows that if you have enough hair you wont miss the ease of use of the 14 AWG.

Re: Outside GFCI

Thank you for answering my question about Outside GFCI. I will be connecting it to the living room receptacle circuit.

Re: Outside GFCI

I personally find it to be a disservice to place several receptacles dowstream from one gfci.

This is especially true for bathrooms. I don't mind it so much in one room or location such as a kitchen, but when you have three or four receptacles outside and served from one gfci inside the garage or at the panelboard is really inconvienent.

That being said, the customer should pay for that convienence.

Re: Outside GFCI

I agree with Bryan, trying to find a tripped GFI that doesn't seem associated with an outlet not working sucks.

A friend of mine recently called me to fix a circuit that caused his added on room to not work. I showed up a month later :( and after I looked at the situation for 45 minutes I finally pulled out the couch in front of the "nobody knew it was there" GFI.

I had a feeling you were gonna get delicate on me. I was referencing the NEC proposals thread.

I have one that even triped his main in a dedacated 100 amp panel this year, that only supplys his holiday receptacles! I wish I had taken a photo of the light's he puts up every year. He said by next year he better have a 200 amp panel :D

I know, Sam. Messing with ya. In high school someone pointed to me in gym class and mentioned a resemblance to Austin Powers... :D

That's nuts, Wayne! How...Why...How does he manage to consume 100 amps worth of X-mas lights???
