Does the code allow an outside Gfci rec to be installed in a plastic remodeling box that is cut into the osb sheeting and vinyl siding so outside surface of box is even with exterior siding and a weather proff cover is used. I have seen a lot done this way. I never did really like to see the surface mounted weather proof boxes protruding out from the wall. This is on a covered porch.

IMO either way can be done code compliantly but if it was up to me I would use a siding block or even better ....

If should be okay. It's the same thing as a new-work box installed the same way.

On a covered porch I think a damp location cover and the old work box look much nicer. But the in-box pictured is my preference for wet locations.

edit: I was thinking cedar claps or shingles. I prefer the box shown for vinyl siding. I don't think covers seal the vinyl siding well.
