A friend of mine is building a polebarn and is asking me about the service. I was planning on running the barn from his house panel but then found the house panel is a branch circuit off a 200amp panel outside the home that also feeds the well and septic. The outside panel is also closer to the barn so i would like to use it but can not find any specific code that references an outside distribution panel. any suggestions or code references would be appreciated.

feeder plan - 2-2-2-4 direct burial with 90A breaker and 5/8 ground rod w/ #6 bare at new barn

Not sure the 90 amp breaker is good to go but the 2-2-2-4 direct burial is good. Lots of other rules to conform to but the wire will work.

#2 Al is good for 90A so the breaker is fine.

I would seriously consider putting the DB wire in conduit. A little nick now could be a disaster later.
