Is there a maximum distance before an outside Main Disconnect (breaker or fuse) is required? Or is it code for all residential installations?

Thanks!

I found this

408.36 Overcurrent Protection. In addition to the requirement
of 408.30, a panelboard shall be protected by an
overcurrent protective device having a rating not greater
than that of the panelboard. This overcurrent protective device
shall be located within or at any point on the supply
side of the panelboard.

All panelboards require OCPD, I thought you were referring to a set distance for unfused service entrance conductors allowed inside a building according to:

230.71(A)(1) Readily Accessible Location. The service disconnecting
means shall be installed at a readily accessible location
either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the
point of entrance of the service conductors

It is required outside when the SEC's enter into the structure farther then the distance in the code section the Jumper posted. ;)

Check with your utility. Some require an outside main regardless. We do.
