I have a run of 240mm2 4 conductor cable w/ground the equilivent to 500kcmil in a manhole which originally was going to be used for a 400amp panel.

Now the electrical engineer wants to down size the panel for the building to a 225amp panel and still wants to use the existing 500kcmil cable by splicing at both ends with a 4/0awg to save money.

I don't agree with him on this one because your coming from the main panel with 4/0 out of a 225amp breaker and upsizing to 500kcmil in one manhole and downsizing 500kcmil to 4/0awg in another manhole going into a 225amp main breaker panel.

What do you think about this project? It's in another country. Your input would be greatly appreciated. This is not a outside feeder tap.

I'm trying to stay within the code with this project. Over here people tend to tap into any electrical wire or cable they can just because power is there not worrying about the code and consequences.

I don't see any issue at all.

It sounds like you have a 225 breaker at both ends so the use of the '500' cable will result in less voltage drop and better efficiency.

By the way, if both ends have a 225 amp breaker there is no 'tap'
