Think of LFMC (liquid tight) and it's PVC overall outer jacket.

You can get MC with the same plastic jacket as LFMC, we use it in parking structures.

AC and MC can be purchased with a plastic outer sheath (covering), as Bob has mentioned. I believe the reason that this type of cable is not permitted for the exception is the outer sheath impedes the heat dissipation of the conductors contained within each of those type cables.

I agree, one manufacturer calls this parking deck MC cable. It can also be used for direct burial.
