I am a bit confused with the NEC 240.21 (C). Here is my situation I have an outdoor industrial location where only trained personnel have access. There is a single load refrigeration machine rated for 500 amps. It will be fed from a 12.47 kV/480 V transformer. Will the underground conductors feeding this machine be required to have over-current protection and or a disconnect. I do not yet have all the cut sheets for this machine, but would guess something of this size would have a disconnect built into it and some sort of internal fusing. The distance of the machine from the xfmr is approximately 50 feet. Thank you in advance

It is my opinion, that 240.21(C)(5) would allow you to run these conductors unprotected if all the conditions in that section are met. I would think one would need to assure that the conditions of 450.3(a) were also met.

Thank you

Thank you

Thank you for your help. I do not know if it is improper on this site to express appreciation!
