My dad is putting in a barn near a set of utility lines. Not sure of the voltage but he is the only house for a mile or so. the line is before the step down Transformer so I Imagen it is medium voltage. What distance does the barn have to be from those lines? I am guessing I will have to call the power company for this one. Nothing like excavating a place for the barn then I asked him if he checked about the clearances. I thought he was going to throw a pitch fork at me. Is there a minimum standard? He is 6' horizontally away but the line would be eye level when your on the roof of the barn.

This is why PA needs permits and other regulations.

I am not sure were to post this I know the NEC won't apply.

Easement

Easement

You might go right to your fathers deed of the land that might show the power easement.

Our local utility hires crews who do nothing but go out and look for buildings that have been put up on their easements. When they find one, they send out a line crew who will move the overhead utility for 4 grand a pole, send the person a bill, and say "Thank you very much!"

The crazy part is that my dad borrowed the backhoe from my uncle who is a retired Lineman My dad just asked him what the clearance was this is what he said "I don't know, I know I always hated to tell someone they need to move their building". Same uncle that forgot to open the Main breaker for his house while running a generator. That generator does not work now.

15' for the 12.5kv line for penelec, After a nice game of phone tag I gave them the pole number and she was able to tell me in 2 minutes. They also told me the the new lines being installed it will be a 25' on any side. Meaning 25' from the farthest point even the cross arms on the pole. I think the osha says it's 10' Rea told me 20'. osha is for safety and the utility is for right a way.

20 ft

20 ft

In my area the utility co requires 20 ft from nearest conductor to overhang of building. They measues on ground by sighting above so its plus minus couple ft
