Overhead feed

I have a detached garage. I am running a overhead feed from the main home panel to the sub panel of the garage. This is a single phase system. Do i need to run a equipment grounding conductor with the tri-plex or could i drive a ground rod at the sub panel?

If you are under a code cycle before 2008 read 250.32(B)(2)

If your area is already under the 2008 the answer is no.

You will have to install a ground rod in either case.

It's important to note that this is a misstatement. Under previous cycles, you don't "run an EGC or drive a ground rod".

You either run an EGC or bond the neutral at the subpanel if you don't, and can comply with 250.32(B)(2). The key is establishing a fault return path to the source in the event of a ground fault.

The ground rod is required, but irrelevant when talking about the decision to run an EGC to a detached structure.

Qoute from the NEC (qoute not in entirety of the section quoted from)

"250.32. Buildings or Structures Supplied by Feeder(s) or Branch Circuit(s).
(A) Grounding Electrode.
Building(s) or structures(s) suplied by feeder(s) or branch circuit(s) shall have a grounding electrode or grounding electrode system installed in accordance with 250.50."

Of course one should read the entire section to understand the requirements in their entirety...I posted this portion to show the electrode/electrode system requirement.

Is the triplex UL listed?

They make quadruplex, perfect for 2008 code or if you have other metallic paths bonded to the grounding system in both buildings, You will still need ground rods at each building.

on the quadruplex is the neutral identified on the cable or do you have to meter it out? the bare wire is the egc of course.

Depends on the manufacture, but I have seen all three conductors identified or just one of the conductors...

Southwires Quadruplex,
Conductors are manufactured with
ridges for phase identification (one conductor one ridge, one conductor two ridges, one conductor plain.

In aerial quadplex, unlike SPT cable, the neutral is generally the one without the "rib" on the conductor insulation.
