I currently have a panel installed which requires the cabinet door to be opened to reset the overload. Are there any NEC code requirements that require the reset operation to be done without having to open the cabinet door?

This would seem to be a potential NFPA 70E issue also.

The NEC does not address that, but as you stated 70E does. The resting of the overload will require operator training and the correct PPE.
If this is a motor starter overload, remote operated solenoid resets are available for many overload relays.
