Does anyone know the minimim spacing required by NFPA from a smoke alarm to the end of the fan blades?

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

I'm pretty familiar with the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA72, and I don't believe you will find a reference to this.

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

I believe it's 30 inches but forgot who inforces it.The idea behind it is not to defeet the smoke detecter by blowing smoke away.

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

yep yep.

I would like to take this a step further, if I may.

In new construction, where a CF Prewire is installed, but there is NO CF on the final, a blank cover is installed.

CF's come in all various sizes. 26" 44", 52", etc.

How would you determine the distance to where to put the smoke detector

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

We are currently requesting the smoke alarms to be installed at least 5' from the ceiling fan outlet location.

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

The sum of the 3 fan sizes devided by square root of 3 plus 36" Seriously dose it need to be this hard to nail up a smoke box?

That might be hard to do in a 10 x10 bedroom

re;distance between a fan and a smoke det.--generally the paddle fan is located in a central part of a room while smokes come w/ manufacturers directions indicating a location near the room exit door leading to the hallway--have to be a big fan or a very small room to not have the proper distance between the 2 .

Not that hard - it's over 7 feet from the center of the room to a corner. :D

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

We occasionaly have the case where the room has multiple obstacles for the smoke alarm placement. Between staying within 36" of the highest point, 36" from the supply register, 36" from a bathroom door, and now 36" from the ceiling fan, it can be a little difficult.

In these situations, I feel a compromise is needed. Through conversations with a State Fire Marshall, encroaching in on the space away from the suppy register can be relaxed if not in the direct air flow. Also, the design of the bathroom may permit the smoke alarm closer to the room's door without being a nuisance. So really, it just comes down to finding the best fit when the smoke alarm will be most effective.

Re: Paddle Fan and Smoke Alarm

Our journeymen put it at 62" from the center of the paddle fan box.And 8" down if installed on wall to allow for crown molding "if installed".And no lower than 12".
