Paddle Fan

I have a customer who would like to install a paddle fan in their house that was built in 1976. They would like to install the fan in a room that has a vaulted wooded ceiling. The ceiling has a little bit of a slope, but not too bad. There is already a hole at the fan’s location with a 14-2. It appears that the wooden ceiling is approximately 2 1/2” thick. It looks like a carpenter put 2x8’s across the ceiling rafters and then put the wood ceiling on top of that. The hole for the fan is located in the middle of the bay. I was wondering what type of box I can use for a ceiling this thick that’s located in the middle of the bay?

I would use fender washers (stacked) and long wood screws to fasten an 1 1/2" deep fan rated box to the 2 x 8. This way your box could be flush with the wood ceiling and be code compliant.

If you take a look at the picture you can see the hole is already cut into the 2x8. Could I put a 2x4 up through the hole and lay it on top of the 2x8. I then would have to send long screws up through the entire ceiling to hold the 2x4 in place. I then could put a block or something to fill in the space between the fan box and the 2 x 4. I would also have to deal with getting the 14-2 through both the 2x4 and the piece of block. I’m just trying to find a solution

What size is the hole? If it is smaller than 4" I would use a fan rated pancake box, if there was enough wood to screw on the pancake box.

If the hole is just big enough to fit a round fan box in you could put a piece of metal above the hole and use all-thread with nuts on both sides of the box to secure it. The fan mount could be screwed straight to the ceiling. The box would just be for the wiring.
