At an industrial facility where my company did the electrical installation a couple years ago, there was a chemical release that discolored/ate the coating off the EMT conduit. The owner is talking about painting the conduit is there anything in the NEC that prohibits the painting of EMT conduits.

If there is then nearly every large store is in violation. Next time you are in a Wal-Mart or a Meijer's store take a look at the ceiling structures. Everything up there is painted the same color, and it's thick!

Edit: There is likely an NEC violation in knowing the exterior of the conduit was damaged and not replacing it. Who is to say that the interior or fittings aren't damaged by the chemical release without looking at every one of them?
