Re: Pancakes

I haven't used any plastic pancake boxes and don't think any of my suppliers even stock them. The city of San Jose will not accept metal 3/0 pancakes.

Re: Pancakes

Have not used a pancake but have used a shallow plastic box for a recpt. in a kitchen island. The only place to put the recp. was in the side of the island where the dishwasher was going. their was just enough room for the romex to come in,wire the recpt. and install. ( end of line so no wire going out) had no problem with the inspection

Re: Pancakes

CEB are you refering to those blue carlon boxes ??
If so we were using them also for back splash receptacles in bath rooms,When the cabinet guys cut the splashes out either in front of a stud or solid block.Until the tags started !!!!They are 8.0 cu.in. cap.1- 12/2 nm = 6.75 cu. in. and then factor in the device 4.50 cu.in.= red tag.So out the window those went !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Pancakes

Ryan,
No it's not a good attitude. I was hired to come in and complete a remodel job that the ELECTRICIAN who was on house arrest and a crack addict walked off of with a $800.00 draw. it was a situation where by code the island had to have a recp. and their was only one place to put it because of drawers on one side and the overhang on front was more than code allowed the side where the dishwasher went was the only way to go.With only one 12/2 and side wiring it went smoothly with out resorting to a ball pin hammer :p

Re: Pancakes

I've seen some folks put a wiremold box extender on the surface of the cabinet to extend the shallow handy box. After the final inspection the wiremold extender usually disappears. Personally, the wiremold box doesn't look so bad if it's painted to match the cabinet-- but of course a deeper flush box would be ideal-- but not always practical in a retrofit situation.

CEB: Let me apologize to you mate. I was being sarcastic when I wrote that and due to my frame of mind at the time that I posted it I should have just shut the h&*l up! Having read the rest of your story it is very obvious that you care about electrical safety and take it seriously. Thanks for calling me on that.
