do you have to phase a panel board? what I mean is if you have a 480 volt panel panel, brown, orange yellow, you put a 3 phase breaker in and slots one and three are used ( brown and orange ) can you put the breaker on the slots of 5, 7 and 9? I think this will be out of phase but not sure if there is a code for this?

Re: panel board phasing

It will not be ?out of phase,? since that phrase refers to the angle between phase voltages. What you really are asking is whether it will be ?out of phase sequence.? That answer is ?no,? and the use you describe is acceptable. A breaker in slots 1, 3, 5 will have the sequence A, B, C. A breaker in slots 3, 5, 7 will have the sequence B, C, A. A breaker in slots 5, 7, 9 will have the sequence C, A, B. These are all the same sequence. A motor connected to any of the three breakers would rotate in the same direction.

Re: panel board phasing

The phase rotation will not change from the lugs on the line side,of the panel, to the load side of the breaker.

Re: panel board phasing

There is a code requirement in 408.3(E) for the phase rotation of the panelboard or switchboard bus. It requires A,B,C to be left to right, top to bottom or front to back when viewed from the front of the equipment.

how would a motor run in the same direction if it was tied to any one of the three phase arrangements? I have always just changed two wires to change the rotation of the motor.
ex.

t1 - a
t2 - b
t3 - c
change any two wires

t1 - b
t2 - a
t3 - c

this will change the rotation every time!!!!!!

Clockwise rotation. a,b,c,...b,c,a,...c,a,b,

Counter clockwise. a,c,b,...c,b,a,...b,c,a,

Charlie did not change the direction.

Re: panel board phasing

408.3(E) is usually interpreted as a requirement for the location of the bus bars, not the location of the branch breaker lugs.

Square D I-Line panelboards require different breakers (referred to as CBA) on the right hand side mounting locations if the local AHJ requires ABC top to bottom at the breaker lugs.
