I was always taught that Meters or the top disconnect switch in a panel had to be mounted between 5'-6" and 6'-6". I have read through clearances for panels and equipment, but never have found an NEC required height. Does anyone know if this is code or another idea passed on from license to license through the years.

The handles of breakers and switches cannot be higher than 6'-7" in most cases.

240.24(A) / 404.8(A)

They can be as low as you want, they could be on the ground except the service to a mobile home.

550.32(F)

Meters are not covered by the NEC, the power company will determine the height that meters must be located and that height changes depending on the particular power company and installation.

Guyute,

Typically, the local POCO will determine / regulate the meter installation height,
...check with yours to find out.....Also, see Artilce 240.24(A) in the `08 NEC -

" ...is not more than 6' - 7" above the floor... "

Thank you both. I will check with the POCO about Meter heights, but I was more concerned with the switch gear I was trying to install on top of some risers that come through concrete. Appreciate the help
