Is there any Code reference that requires the main or back-fed breaker to be identified as to where it's being fed?

Is the breaker marked line and load or not? If not then either end can bee feed.
I think he is asking whether or not you have to identify the source of the power that is feeding the backfed breaker or main breaker.
Good point. In any event the breaker must be marked as being the main to your point.
