Panel Location in Home

Are there any codes in the NEC 2008 that could prohibit an outdoor location for the main panel for the home?

Nope.

The panel must be suitable for the location but it is OK to have it located outdoors.

Agree. Any suitable location. The code does prohibit certain locations (230.70(A)), but outdoors is fine. Probably half of the services I inspect have a panel outdoors.

Depending on the part of the country, you could find all or most residential installed outdoors such as here in the Sacramento Valley in CA, non- residential is a mixed bag.
