I can't seem to find in the code book where you can and cannot locate an electric panel. I have a home owner who wants the panel in what is labeled the pantry it measures 4' x 8' with the proper working clearance on the end wall. Is it alright to put a panel in the pantry?

Re: Panel Location

I know of no NEC requirement that would prohibit this installation.

Re: Panel Location

sounds like a right smart place to put it.All short runs to kitchen items and convienant if it trips a breaker.Only negative i see is you just know they will add some shelves under it

Re: Panel Location

The only thing that I can think of is 240.24(D), in the vicinity of easily ignitible materials. This would be a very subjective issue, however. I think it might be a good idea to get the AHJ's approval before you do so.

I personally would allow it.

Re: Panel Location

A pantry would still be a closet though. No clothing but boxes of cereal are still easily ignitable items.I also would meet with the AHJ prior to installing and ask him if he approves this installation.Jim the point of a homeowner installing shelves below the panel after inspection is a futile argument. How many panels in an empty garage when final have you seen above work benches,in cabinets when a service call is done. The only thing an inspector can cite is what is there at the time of the inspection. Not what might be done down the road.Recently had an inspector want to tag a final because the carflex to the water heater was a few inches away from the heater itself. He said the homeowner might use it for a hanger for clothes and that made it subject to physical damage. After asking where in the NEC that this was an article and that by the same train of thought the same person could punch out the drywall and use the nm for the same thing he conceded and passed the final.
