PANEL MOUNTED POWER SUPPLIES!

I am designing a control panel for a client that has grown into a 70A demand for the 24VDC. Is there a code issue having three 20A and one 10A hooked in parallel?

Re: PANEL MOUNTED POWER SUPPLIES!

It sounds like you want to put 3 power supplies in parallel. Is this correct? It is generally a bad idea to put power supplies in parallel unless they are specifically designed for that use. The reason is that if one produces a slightly different voltage, a large current will flow from one supply through the other supply. The results could be very bad to say the least.

The only code reference I can think of off hand that might apply would be the requirement to install equipment per the manufacturer's instructions. Unless they say you can parallel their power supplies, I wouldn't suggest it.

PS. Power supplies designed to be placed in parallel would have some type of feedback to track the voltage of the other supply and keep the difference to a very small amount.
