Panelboard behind door

Location: Commercial Mechanical room; single man-door entry.
Space is tight (but when when isn't it, right??).
Question: Can a 100 Amp 208Y/120 panelboard (not service entrance) be located behind the door if Article 110.26 clearances are met when the door is closed? When the Mechanical-room door is open, it would be in front of the panelboard (if this isn't obvious). However, no one would be working on the panel with the door open. Once you go into the room and close the door, you would have the minimum work-space because the door would be out of the way. If not permitted, pls site references. It just seems wrong . . . but I've been requested to put it there if I can't find a specific section that says it isn't permitted.

Behind the door is fine, as long as the clearances in Article 110 are met when the door is closed.

I agree that this is acceptable. I will note, however, that in previous discussions of this topic on this forum, others have given opposite opinions. In fact, some have reported that they were not able to convince the inspector that the working clearance requirement was met.

I did some searching thru previous posts before leaving the question, but didn't find any. Sorry if I repeated any previous discussion.

I am sure you did; it's not a problem. The search engine on this forum is not the best or the easiest to use.

Show me panel behind the swing of a door and I'll show you a panel that will never a shelf built right in front of it.

I'm a big fan of panels behind door swings for this reason.
