A few of my collegues have done electrical design installations where they install panelboards behind doors, for example in Janitor's closets, garbage closets, etc. There's nothing in the Code that says you can't do this. When the closet door is shut you have your clearance as required by Code. The only downside to this I see is that if someone is working on this panel with the cover off and someone opens the door. Is this an acceptable practice? Does the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) have final say in this?

Yes the closet door opens into the closet, therefore the panel would be behind the door in/on the wall. In order to work on the panel the door to the closet would have to be closed.

I don't see a problem with that. If you don't want anyone to open the door on you, then block it closed, or put up a sign, or remove it entirely.

i would be worried about being electrocuted, falling against the door unconsious, and noone could open it to get me out. But shouldnt be working in panel hot anyways so non-issue i guess ;)

...and no pesky key to lose :D

I would prefer to see the panelboard behind the door. This way when going to work on it I would know for sure that there won't be a mountain of debris in front of it.

I agree. People seem to ALWAYS stack crap in front of it otherwise, this guarantees the space will always be clear.;)
