I am doing the electrical design on an apartment building with very tiny apartments. I thought that I read that there was a code change preventing panelboards from being placed in restrooms in residences. I cannot find it now - so was I dreaming? The code clearly indicates that there should be workspace in front of a panelboard, and we all know that a dweller of a tiny apartment isn't going to respect that at all. Where do you put a panelboard in an apartment designed with no halls?

(E) Not Located in Bathrooms. In dwelling units and guest rooms of hotels and motels, overcurrent devices, other than supplementary overcurrent protection, shall notbe located in bathrooms as defined in Article 100.

Put it over the master bedroom bed, so when the vibrating bed overheats the circuit, they will not have to leave bed to reset it ;)

It kind of make me wonder why a designer would ask such the question.

What exactly is a building wiring engineer?

Re: panelboard locations

A good place is on the wall behind the swing of an open door such as the entry way to the unit. This usually ensures adequate working space and is not an area where people tend to hang pictures or place stuff.

Re: panelboard locations

If the apartment has a bedroom door, place it behind the door. This will keep people from putting things in front of the working space, and since most doors are usually 36" wide, you are guaranteed to have your 3' deadfront clearance

hope this helps
