have a 1.5MW generator feeder consisting of 9 sets of 500 MCM AL conductors. the PVC conduits are underground and the contractor is looking to place the same phase conductors in their own conduits. I see the exception in Art. 300 allows this but it clear on "underground". this feeder will have to come out of the generator slab and up into the sub-base tank stub-up area which is about 50" high to another 23" up to the bottom of the generator's MLCB enclosure. I've never done it this way and have always placed each "set" of ABC, N, G in their own conduit. thoughts?
 
How would you even divide ABC-N with 9 sets? You may also have a derating issue depending on the answer to the first question.
 
Having each phase in its own conduit makes for easier makeup as the phase conductor conduits can terminate under each phase terminal.
Typically open bottom switchgear is used.

Yes, it's okay, as long as you don't make individual penetrations through ferrous metal with them divided like that.
