I am trying to find a standard/policy/regulation on whether or not it is permissible to parallel directly off the 3 phase 480V motor feed and use that voltage for something else. Basically disconnect the wires inside motor J-box (at the motor itself!), pull the cable out of the motor J-box, feed the cable to new J-box where the 480V 3 phase would be split (parallel connection) so that one "side" goes back to the motor and the other "side" goes to a 480/230 VAC transformer which would then feed two 230 VAC solenoid valves.
I have personally never heard of paralleling off the 3 phase connection right at the motor and use it as a signal/control for something else. If that is needed then of course there are auxiliary contacts on the MCC that can be used, but this is something that was left to me by my predecessor and I have a hard time digesting and accepting.
Has anyone ever done a similar modification and what could be the implications of something like this?
Thanks.
