Parking Lot Lighting Repair

I currently lost a parking lot light in some wind. I then discovered the poles where set right on top of the pillars with no weep tubes to installed. You probably guessed I have a lot of poles going bad. Along with the lose of the poles, the thread to the original 3/4" j-bolts are missing completely in spots. Any ideas out there, other than replacing the whole peir on how I can anchor these poles?

Thanks dfoster1

Cut off all four existing j-bolts, hammer drill new holes into the base. Use two part epoxy to secure new sections of threaded rod into the drilled holes.

I have done a few and it really works great.

I hope you talk to an engineer prior to hacking off the j-bolts. I'm sure there is some sort of minimum embedment, size bolts and epoxy that will be required.

No I just drilled in a couple of inches and used Elmer's glue. ;)

You can get the needed info from the pole manufacturer if you do not want to hire an engineer.

If I recall it was 1" hole about 18" into the concrete, partially filled with a fancy caulking gun that self mixed the two part epoxy. Then we forced a 3/4" threaded rod down into the epoxy.

The poles where less than 20' with single heads probably around 400 watt.

After just a few hours they where fully cured, supposedly the rod will break before it can be pulled from the concrete.

pier repair

dfoster1,
In the past we ran into this same problem, I have never heard of the epoxy method of repair so we did the repair in two other methods. In one case, we cut the top of the pier 1-1/2" down using a concrete saw. We used a small rotaty hammer chisel to break off the the top piece after it had been cut exposing the existing J bolts. We cleaned up the threads using a thread chaser and remounted the pole using washers to level the pole. Most J bolts have 4-6 inches of thread on them and the concrete pier seemed to keep the existing threads in good condition. Another method we found worked in a pinch was to use a smaller rotary bit around each J bolt. We created a hollow around the existing threads and ran on a rod coupling about half it's length. We then installed washers ontop of the coupling to produce a new anchor foot for the pole base. Bolts or threaded rod pieces can be installed in the upper side of the couplings.
Hope these can help.
