Parralel Services

I have 2 existing 4000Amp services side by side in the same electrical service room. For a shut down I have to parralel the 2 services on the load side of the Service Switches, so the utility can cut us free from each service one at a time and we will not be without electricity. The completion of all work will last 4 days. My QUESTION is: After my service is parraled with 5 sets of 500MCM in free air and both service switches are energized, can I leave it this way for 2-3 days? The room is locked. I am trying to avoid in removing my parralel 500mcm jumpers , and put them back on again in 2-3 days. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Parralel Services

Many facilities that have two services have a permanent bus-tie breaker installed for that purpose.

Perhaps now is the time to do it. Think of how simple this operation would be in the future.

Re: Parralel Services

I am familiar with a buss-tie breaker. Would my jumpers be the same since they would be connected with both services energized? I believe the buss-tie breakers only transfer from one to another?

Re: Parralel Services

Temporary tie feeders could be left with the permission of the AHJ. Involve your inspector, not only to cover your a--, but for your own piece of mind.

Re: Parralel Services

With a "bus tie" system there are 3 breakers. Two mains and a tie breaker. In most cases the tie breaker is left open and both mains are closed. If you need to shut down one service, you close the tie breaker placing the services in parallel and then open one main. No power outage for this operation. For this to work, the utility must approve placing the services in parallel.
