Hey guys...I havent posted in a while just wanted to let everyone know that I passed my unrestricted exam with an 84 the first time around. I got my results last week and turned 22 today. Everyone is bragging on me around the workplace because of my age. I've been blushing a little lately haha. I do have a question though. I am sizing a feeder to run from a transformer to a 1200 amp MDP in a hotel. The voltate is 120/208. I am paralleling 3 - 500's per phase(I stepped up to the 500's because I am running through conduit...I assume that was the correct thing to do) but i am a little lost on calculating the size of the neutral. Any help? Thanks guys!

Congrats on the test, How long have you been in the trade??
Look in 215.2 A , You will find you're answer there

I've worked for my dad who is an EC since I was 15 so about 7 years now...I went ahead with the test because hes wanting to get out of it and leave it to me. Im looking forward to it but have no idea about the business side of things. I have much to learn.

I'd be sure that the feeder didn't need to be engineered before I even bothered. :)

The only engineering that is going to get done is by me. The Owner was to cheap to get an electrical engineer involved and all the architect done was throw some lights and receps on the prints.

Congrats dude! welcome to the club. I am 28 and passed the NC Unlimited (Master) exam in Jan. I'm in the same boat as you with the business end of things...My dad is also backing out of the biz. He mas more into the work than the books so to speak so I'm having to catch up, quick. this place is a great resource.

Never ever ever EVER derate the neutral on a WYE system.
Are 500s good for 380amps or something like that?
You have to round down above 800 amps.

BTW, Congrats!!
How many hours was the test?

430 Amps on 90 degree 500 kcmil THHN according to UGLYs....and Thanks! The test was 8 hours long...i took pretty much the whole time to finish it...it was pretty tough for me haha

Are there any books you guys would recommend to give me some basics on the business side of our trade? Books on estimating and other things. One complaint I have about the old man is that I dont really think he does the best job in the world on pricing so Id like to gather some outside information. Thanks guys

Be careful, Its not easy to use that 90 degree column

Congrads :)) you are in the club now. As far as 1200A, I normaly bid and do 3 parallel sets of 4 #600kcmil with #3/0 got a ground

Unless ALL the terminations circuit breakers etc. are rated for 90 degree C you will have to use the 75 degree C rating for the 500kcm conductors. Per table 310.16 is 380 amps for a 500kcm copper thhn conductor. The 90 degree C rating is usually used for applying the adjustment factors. See 110.14 (C). So for a 1200 amp service that is based on 75 degree C you would have to use a 600 kcm cu 75 degree conductor which is rated at 420 amps X 3 = 1260 amps. A little over but per Art 240.4 (C) the conductors shall be equal or greater than the overcurrent device. Also look a art 310.15 (B) (4)
