I just received Mike's email stating that as per 250.118(11).the outer sheath of mc cable is not listed as a suitable ground fault return path for patient care areas, and cannot be used.My question is where in 250.118(11) does it say that the mc cable is not listed, or in 250.118(9)where ac cable is?
250.118 states the equipment grounding conductor shall be one or more of the following, originally making me think that mc cable would be allowed as per 250.118(11).

Re: Patient care areas

Jap, the NEC doesn't tell you what materials are listed, this information is from a third party testing lab and will be included with the product.

The sheath of Type AC is recognized as meeting the requirements. There is a type of MC that is also recognized but it is not common in field wiring.

The most common type of cable used in health care is HCFC which is a hibrid AC and includes an insulated EGC to meet the redundant grounding of patient care areas.

But 250.118(11) does tell you this:

1. For interlocked-metal tape type MC cable, BOTH the COMBINED metal sheath and grounding conductors are required to be a EGC.

But this doesn't meet the requirements of 517.13(A) since the metal tape alone would have to qualify as a EGC.

2. For smooth or corrigated tube type MC cable, the metallic sheath is all thats required for a EGC.

This does meet the requirements of 517.13(A).

3. (See 2501.118(9)) For AC cable as provided in 320.108, the Armor is suitable as an EGC.

This also meets the requirements of 517.13(A).
