I was thinking of getting a Dell x30 to use for work. How many of you use a PDA for work, and what programs are a must have for your PDA? I travel alot for work, and want to use the GPS to be able to find the jobs alot easier. I also want to download a copy of the NEC, and be able to search for certain things on it. I also figured I could use it to surf the web and be able to find the answer to things a little easier than using a laptop. Also what other uses have you found that your PDA makes life easier.

Re: PDA programs

Garmin has a PDA that has built in talking GPS with address lookup and will also run Adobe Acro-Batt PDF's which any NEC CD rom has on it that can be loaded through any computer. It's a great set up that make finding jobes alot easer and you can do time tracking by looking back at how long the PDA was at a certin location. as the Garmin does logging of everywhere you go.
Here is the one I'm talking about:

iQUE 3600 PDA

P.S. If you order one get the extra memory.

Re: PDA programs

I bought a Dell Axim X3 about 4 months ago and am hooked. It saves my life for scheduling etc. I do not have the GPS equipment but I use a Rand McNally mapping program that really helps me get around. I checked into every PDA made and came to the conclusion that there wasn't a better deal than the Dell series.

Re: PDA programs

I ended up ordering up the Dell x30 high. I checked out the Garmin, it needed at least a SD or CF slot to add things later. It was a nice looking set up though.

What I liked about the Dell is I can get the GPS, add as many programs as I want(SD slot), burn DVD's to the cards, hook up through the internet with the built in wi-fi or bluetooth and many more things. They had a big sale last week so I said what the heck, I want to try to become more orgainised. Well see if I use it or not.

Re: PDA programs

I have been using my Dell for about a year. It is only good if you use it in a regular fashion. I sync it with my laptop and it does that function automatically when you dock it. I have all of my contact numbers on it and a complete schedule with notes. I have gotten used to using it every day. If you have a lot of info to type into it, use your computer and then sync it.
I have not found a copy of the NEC yet. There are a host of other programs, but I use Outlook the most.

The next really good 'gadget' that I am waiting for is when the PDA will be affordable with the phone, that will be very cool.

One other function that I use the Dell for is quick sketches on a job site, or quick notes. It is very good for that and downloads back to my computer so I can print them.
I have not had to carry a paper organizer in months!!

Re: PDA programs

One of my computer magazines said sales of the PDAs are down, Sony is stopped marketing theirs and are waiting to see what happens in the market, the expectation is the combination PDA Cell phone will be where the market goes

Do you have the NEC on cd-rom?
If you do there is a copy of the NEC in PDF (Adobe? Acrobat?)(At least in all the cd installs I have checked so far) that loads to your hard drive in the:

C:\Program Files\National Fire Protection Association\National Electrical Code 2002 Edition\NFO

Folder. The file name is: NEC2002.PDF Or just put this file name in the find file or folders program on the start menu.

Adobe has a version of Acro batt reader for PDA's but remember that this file is over 4 Mb's So you might need extra mem.
