I'm looking to install PDU's in existing electronic test labs. I'm not sure if these rooms meet all of the requirements of an Article 645 computer electronics room, should I be concerned about using PDU's.

i.e. Do PDU's represent one of the allowances afforded by Article 645 or may I use them as I see fit?

Thanks,

Mike

Check to see what listing the PDU's that you want have. If they are listed only as some type of IT equipment then I think you are out of luck. If they have a panelboard listing or something similar, you should be okay.
In NYC they just (last year) had an interpretation made to forbid PDU's in non-645 rooms.

I think the reasoning is that equipment only listed for IT Equipment Rooms are not always compliant with some of the more restrictive rules in place for standalone transformers, STS's and panelboards. If the equipment is also listed as regular switchboard construction for example, you should be able to install it in non-645 rooms.

The NYC ruling came about in the "Code Revision and Interpretation Committee" minutes of April 5, 2006. Question #5
