I have a situation where I need to install lighting over an island in a kitchen. The HO is set on pendant style lighting and in researching my options, I'm looking at low voltage as well as line voltage fixtures. Just wondering what the advantage of one form over the other may be. Any comments will be appreciated.

All things being equal I would opt for line voltage every time. Low voltage = more cost and more warranty issues.
I agree! Low voltage fixtures usually rely on MR16 bulbs, which run very hot and do not last that long. Not to mention the addition of the transformer, which is another failure point. There are more bulb options with line voltage, and if they wish to dim, then you can use standard dimmers.
