I'm looking at wiring some duplex apartments and need to run feeders from the disconnects. There are 4 duplex and the 4 gang meter base will be located on the left side with a 125 amp disconnect under each meter. The apartments are built on a concrete slab and the fire wall between each apartments goes through the attic to the roof sheating.
An inspector had advised the owner that in order to penetrate the fire wall, it needed a special collar. I've never heard of those. We were planning on running the feeders through the floor trusses and penetrating the fire walls between each apartment. I don't see any other way without penetrating a fire wall. Anyone heard of those collars or know of any codes against running the feeders through the fire wall at the floor trusses and using fire caulking on both sides of the fire wall?

I remember having to look up UL-approved penetration details that most closely matched my situation; e.g., wall or ceiling, construction material, penetration type, the fire-stopping methods and materials, the right type of fire caulk, etc.

Here's an example:

My last CEU class on fire penetrations made it clear that most electricians screw up fire penetrations.

The problem is too many products with too many variables, which are not listed for all construction or materials.

The only electricians that were doing this right either subbed it out to fire experts, or had access to product technical representatives, and most of the cheeper products don't provide tech support.

The installation is very much product specific. Hilti, 3M, STI have products. The fire stop must be installed per instructions. Hilti has very good sales support, give them a call. Perhaps a field rep would be available to get you started

As Tom Baker said, these devices are called “Fire Stops”, search for them using that term. There are several different types depending on the hour rating, type of wall, type of penetration etc etc.
