Hello

Does anyone know what the phase colors should be on Medium Voltage cables. I know 480V cables should be colored Brown, Orange, and Yellow but does anybody know what the colors should be on 4.16kV cables? Does anybody know of a chart online where I can find all the different phase colors for different voltages.

Thanks

I'm not aware of any "Standard" Black, Red, blue is very common.

Some Canadian utilities use Red White Blue for their phase designations instead of A,B,C, and high voltage electricians follow that sequence. Overseas it is Red, Yellow, Blue.

In the DC metro area, we use B.O.Y.
Definitely not blk, red, blue,!
I think the best way to phase MV cable is 1 stripe for A phase, 2 stripes for B phase and 3 stripes for C phase.

Larry: I know......It has always been IMO get rotation right and be consistent with existing color scheme.

colors for 4160

colors for 4160

I was just through this the other day with the state inspector. We were looking at a previous job in one of the MV vaults. He said he wanted to see one wrap of yellow tape for A, two wraps of yellow for B, and three wraps of tape for C phase. In fact he gigged the folks for not properly identifying the phase conductors of the cable. I have to admit I have never seen this type of marking before. I have seen individual tags on the conductors allready to say which phase is which. Just my 2 cents, I have'nt seen anything to this affect in the code book either. Has anyone else ??

I see all different color schemes in the Wash metro area..BYO, YBO, BOY...

I did not mean exclusively in the order of B.O.Y.

Brown, orange, yellow is commonly used in the DC metro area.

An old lineman taught me that the one stripe, two stripe, three stripe scheme keeps people from being confused about phasing due to multiple color schemes. Hes right!

If I opened a 35kv air switch and saw the cables marked one stripe, two stripe, three stripe, all being colored white, I would know which phase is which. I have seen that very scheme multiple times...

yep, we use red-yellow-blue here in the philippines

just like the old nursery rhyme...

red-yellow-blue

stars over you......

makes it easier to remember....

Just for clarification, the NEC does not dictate any particluar phase color scheme at any voltage. There are colors used that have become an industry standard, and each locale has probably adopted there own, thru time.

The default should be to use whatever the inspector is looking for.

If it is not in the NEC the inspector should have no say, unless there is a local code.

Every area I have worked in had industry standards, IMO this should be sufficent. Verify rotation.
