Elevator in a building with 240V-1Ph:
The simple answer is use a single phase elevator.

But to explore the options for the architect:
1. Has anyone successfully used a phase converter or VFD to convert from 240V-1Ph to 208V-3Ph for an elevator?

2. Does it matter if the elevator is a regenerative type?

Most single phase elevators use a vfd to convert to three phase for the motor. I had a building that was three phase, they put in a single phase elevator! It had a vfd. I had to upsize my feed to it because it drawed more current, and of course, it was on the far end of the building from the service.

2- AFAIK you can't regen back to the line through most (any?) VFDs unless they're explicitly built for it.

I'd expect the elevator mfg has a lot to say about VFD vs rotary phase converter vs just-get-a-single-phase-elevator  .
