Hi I have a quick question on a rotary phase converter. Customer has a small machine shop in a barn. 400 amp 240 volt single phase service. Does have some 3 phase equipment that he runs off of a rotary phase converter all at 220 He is looking into buying a piece of equipment that is wired for 440 volt only (not a dual voltage). question is can I use the rotary phase converter to power a transformer to bump the power up to the 440?

thanks

Yes, just don't skimp on the transformer size. The 3rd phase is not as capable as the other two, so under sizing the transformer can create more problems for the load, especially when starting it. Use largest motor HP x 3 = kVA, if the motors start Across-the-Line, less is OK if they have soft starters or VFDs.
