I have a few friends with a machineshop in the garage - usually a milling machine and a lathe. Many have 3-phase machines. Some had the power company hook up three-phase. Some used phase converters. I've been considering getting my own milling machine and lathe. I did a little perusing of the code and noted few specifics on a phase converter installation for a machine, or background on the options and their drawbacks (Sag, wrong Voltage, imbalance, etc.).
Perhaps this might be a good subject for one of the emails or magazine articles. It's not something normally encountered in most homes, but it does come up.
I have no intention of this becoming my own DIY project (and since Red Green makes me look skilled with tools I usually avoid doing my own home improvements), but it would be useful for electricians and the end user seeing how it's supposed to be done.
