Can anyone provide me with a direction. I remember reading about a device for identifying each phase in a 3-phase system that injected a signal onto the voltage at the zero-crossing point. A hand-held meter would look for the signal and identify which phase was being sensed. The application would be for a large power system that is energized and in service. Hi-pot offers an old device that requires the system to be deenergized. But, I remember....

The one product is a "phasing set" that is just a HV volt meter and the other requires the line to be dead. I have heard of devices that inject a tone on a line and then you use a probe to identify the line. The phase identification equipment allows a signal to be injected at the substation (or anywhere in the field) and then te handheld voltmeter tells you which phase you are reading.

I think the way it works is that it injects a high frequency signal at the substation and the handheld picks up the signal down stream. My company has an old one that looks like it was made in the 70's. I can't remember who makes it, but I will look at it on Monday.

Thank you. A company I worked for had one but all my contacts have retired/died/left. Maybe, if I can get a name for it, I can find one on eBay.
