hey everyone! i have a quick question and needed some help.... me and my company recently installed a transformer, and came in with the phases seperated in different holes (ex. one hole for 'a' phase, one for 'b'). The xfrm did not pass inspection because we ran the wires the way we did.. the inspector said the penalty was in the NEC, but could not show us! my question is: is there a code containing information on our fault? if there is, where is it? thanks guys!!!!!

Re: phases

i agree with txsparky and it is very common mistake to use all same phase on conduct and the correct sequice is FOR each conduct is A-B-C-N-G that is correct sequce for each conduct no matter howmany it will run that only way it will pass the inspection in the other forum i cant say where but it show the photo where it show the common error there

Re: phases

If I read you correctly you installed each phase conductor through its own metal hole which isolated the phases from one another. This is a violation of 300.20(A) and (B). When phases pass through a metal enclosure they must either be grouped together to cancell the magnetic field or if run separated, you must cut slots between the entries so no single phase is encircled by the metal causing a transformer effect and inducing heat via the magnet field into the metal enclosure.

Re: phases

Just curious,
I assume you are talking about the primary feeders to the transformer. Did you run two conduits to the transformer or one conduit and tee it at the transformer?
I would have installed one conduit with one hole in the transformer for the primary circuit and the same for the secondary.

Re: phases

one more thing to make it clear.. is the phase conducters are multi? ( parlleral ) type ? if so it must have all phase conducters in the conducts but not the one phase all in the conducts at all. due the mangatic force and etc.. but i wish i can link a photo here to show what we are mentioning about code violation it show on one forurm ( i can't say which one yet ) and it show the photo really clear but i can ask don for this help he can try to find the photo to show it clear here
